Are you a full time employee
of a stage company?
If so, you’re likely receiving various benefits from your company including personal health insurance.
They also take the responsibility of covering the work you do as their employee. If you break something while working the company will often take care of it one way or another. Not to say you won’t suffer some consequences between you and your boss.
if you are injured on the job you are covered by various Worker’s Compensation type policies rather than the personal health insurance mentioned above.
Do you work for yourself as an
independent contractor?
The definition of an independent contractor is basically that you are your own company and you are supplying yourself with the various benefits packages and coverages that you would otherwise receive. These pages offer information to provide you with some answers to your questions and, more importantly, to help you discover questions you didn’t even know to ask.
What kind of insurance do you need as an entertainment technician?
What kind of insurance policies are there?
Will you obtain your insurance through your employer?
If you’re an independent contractor, are you covered it all?
What do independent contractors need for insurance?
What do you need to cover for yourself? Health, Gear, Liability, etc?
What is insurance for?
Who is insurance protecting?
These are all important questions to be asking and the scores of answers may, or may not apply to you individually. If you have yet to enter the job market you’ve likely been covered under your parents health insurance policy. Those free checkups and/or minimal co-pay visits to the doctor are all considered personal health insurance activity. This changes completely when you enter the workforce should you be injured on the job site.
Have you ever seen that question on a medical form that asked you “is this visit the result of an injury obtained at work?” That’s the trigger that changes everything if you say yes. The insurance coverage that is supplied through your employer may also be for personal health coverage. There is a different policy that covers you should you fall off a ladder at a worksite while performing company-sponsored activities.
The articles on these pages will offer you a lot of information and guidance to help you have educated discussions with the insurance agencies of your choosing. Personally, I use an insurance broker to obtain my policies. They are better versed than I in what insurance companies have to offer and navigating the in-depth quagmire of informational paperwork that insurance companies supply.
